AFL-CIO to join Wis. immigration group's rally
MILWAUKEE (AP) — An immigrant-rights group that holds marches in downtown Milwaukee every May 1 is getting a boost this year from the AFL-CIO.
Voces (VOH'-ces) de la Frontera has held rallies every year since 2006. The events have drawn tens of thousands of marchers, who call for a reform of immigration laws.
This year's rally will also emphasize labor issues. Voces was active during the Madison protests of recent months over Gov. Scott Walker's efforts to curtail certain collective-bargaining rights.
Speakers at Sunday's rally will include AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, along with the president of the labor union's state chapter.
Christine Neumann-Ortiz is the executive director of Voces de la Frontera. She says the fight for immigrant rights goes hand-in-hand with the fight for all workers' rights.
