WASHINGTON, Nov. 2 .- Of the 94,000 guns recovered in Mexico over the
past five years as part of the fight against cartels and criminal
organizations, 64,000 were of American origin, according to a senior
U.S. official in Washington who asked "more tools "to stop that flow.
As stated the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division of
the Department of Justice, Lanny Breuer, these figures refer to "only
the (weapons) recovered, not all who are" probably circulating in the
neighboring country.
"We must do something to prevent criminals from gaining access to
these weapons," said Breuer to testify at a hearing of the Senate
Judiciary Committee focused on the U.S. "combat international
organized crime."
To a question from Sen. Dianne Feinstein on what would be the "number
one tool" to counter this situation, Breuer said that "information"
about the origin and destination of the weapons sold.
But regretted that, because of opposition from powerful weapons
lobbies in the country-the Bureau of Alcohol, Snuff, and Firearms
(ATF) "can not even receive reports of multiple sales of rifles or
any type of semiautomatic weapons."
All this in a context in which "very few hunters and sportsmen in the
U.S., people who comply with the law, really need to have long or
semi-automatic weapons," he added, referring indirectly to the main
buyers of these weapons. "If today I go to a gun dealer and I want to
buy 50 or 60 semi-automatic weapons, there is nothing that requires
that it be notified of any way to the ATF," said Breuer.
"Without such notification, we lose track of those weapons, and this
is just one example of the kind of tools that will help us fight
this," he said.
Therefore, he said, the main tool you need the ATF is "to be given
the ability to know when to buy these weapons."

WASHINGTON, 2 de noviembre.— De las 94 mil armas recuperadas en
México en los últimos cinco años en el marco del combate a los
cárteles y organizaciones criminales, 64 mil eran de procedencia
estadunidense, reveló un alto funcionario norteamericano en
Washington que pidió "más herramientas" para detener ese flujo.
Según puntualizó el fiscal general adjunto de la división criminal
del Departamento de Justicia, Lanny Breuer, esas cifras se remiten a
"sólo las (armas) recuperadas, no a todas las que están" circulando
probablemente en el país vecino.
"Tenemos que hacer algo para impedir que los criminales accedan a
esas armas", sostuvo Breuer al testificar durante una audiencia del
Comité de Justicia del Senado estadunidense centrada en el "combate
al crimen organizado internacional".
Ante una pregunta de la senadora demócrata Dianne Feinstein sobre
cuál sería la "herramienta número uno" para contrarrestar esta
situación, Breuer replicó que "información" sobre el origen y destino
de las armas vendidas.
Pero lamentó que —por la oposición de fuertes lobbies armamentísticos
en el país— la Oficina de Alcohol, Tabaco y Armas (ATF) "ni siquiera
puede recibir informes sobre ventas múltiples de armas largas o
cualquier tipo de armas semiautomáticas".
Todo ello en un contexto en que "muy pocos cazadores o deportistas en
Estados Unidos, gente que cumple con la ley, necesitan de verdad
tener armas semiautomáticas o largas", añadió en referencia indirecta
a los principales compradores de este tipo de armamento. "Si hoy en
día voy a un vendedor de armas y quiero comprar 50 o 60 armas
semiautomáticas, no hay nada que requiera que ello sea notificado de
ninguna manera a la ATF", dijo Breuer.
"Pero sin ese tipo de notificación, perdemos el rastro de esas armas,
y esto es sólo un ejemplo del tipo de instrumentos que nos ayudará a
luchar contra esto", agregó.
Por ello, indicó, la principal herramienta que necesita la ATF es
"que se le dé la capacidad de saber cuándo se compran este tipo de
armas".
