FROM STAFF REPORTS

Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents arrested 13 suspected drug smugglers
and seized 1,277 pounds of marijuana during three recent incidents.

The pot is estimated to be worth about $638,500.

On Tuesday, agents working north of Davidson Canyon, within the
Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, found a cache of 197 pounds
of abandoned marijuana. The drugs were seized for destruction.

On Wednesday, agents using night-vision equipment southeast of Gila
Bend spotted a group of 14 individuals allegedly carrying backpacks
of marijuana through the desert.

Once members of the group realized they had been discovered, they
reportedly dropped their packs and ran. Agents apprehended 13 men,
all Mexican citizens illegally in the U.S., and seized a combined 632
pounds of marijuana. Agents are still searching for the person who
escaped.

The 13 men and marijuana were turned over to the Maricopa County
Sheriff's Office.

Also Wednesday, agents found about 228 pounds of pot hidden in an
abandoned cache near mile marker 9 on Highway 85, and another 220
pounds hidden near Papago Well within the Cabeza Prieta National
Wildlife Refuge. The drugs were seized for destruction.
