United States returned to Mexico more than 11,000 child migrants in 2011

Mexico. - A total of 11,520 children and adolescents who tried to get
in alone and without documents to the U.S. in 2011 were returned to
Mexican soil by U.S. authorities, said the National Migration
Institute (INM).

"In Mexico, 11,520 children and adolescents migrants traveling
unaccompanied by an adult relative, returned by U.S. authorities were
assisted by Officers Child Protection INM, between January and
December last year 2011" , the institution said in a brief statement.

The Institute did not specify the nationalities of the children.
According to Mexican government figures, an around 140,000
immigrants, mostly from Central America, cross the country annually
for the United States, although NGOs raise this figure to around 400
thousand.

Undocumented immigrants are targeted in Mexico for extortion, theft,
abuse and murder at the hands of organized crime and in some cases it
has been alleged complicity on the part of authorities.
