SAN LUIS RIO COLORADO, Son. — Residents are being offered cash for
weapons in what authorities say is part of a campaign around Sonora
to reduce accidental shooting and gun crimes.

Through Oct. 7, residents can turn in firearms at any of four
collection sites around the city, where they will get 1,000 pesos
(about $74) for each operable gun and 300 pesos (about $22) for
inoperable ones.

A year ago, the campaign netted 10 grenades and 225 firearms, plus
cartridges and fireworks, officials said.

Among the first this week to turn in a weapon was Andres Banez, a San
Luis Rio Colorado teacher who handed over a .38-caliber revolver.
"I have teenage children and I want to avoid an accident from having
a gun in the house. It was a gift, but I never used it. I didn't even
have bullets. I never felt capable of using it, so I always kept it
locked up."

Mexico allows its citizens to possess firearms in a limited number of
small calibers. Guns also must be registered with the Mexican military.

Hector Sandoval, representative of the Sonora Public Safety Ministry,
said there are no statistics on the number of firearms in San Luis
homes, "but there must be many. It's a just a matter of realizing on
the last day of the year, when you hear all the gunshots" celebrating
the arrival of the new year.

The number of gun accidents in San Luis Rio Colorado is low compared
with other areas in Mexico, he said. Also accepted at the collection
sites are fireworks, explosives, ammunition, knives and replica
firearms.
