Mexico City. The majority of members of the migrant caravan, currently located in Mexico City, refused to apply for refuge and did not accept the temporary support program offered by the federal government, the Ministry of the Interior (SG) said this afternoon.

The group of Central Americans, he said, was "timely informed" of the requirements of the law to enter the country in an orderly and safe manner.

"In its great majority, the members of this group rejected the guarantees and facilities granted by the government of our country to benefit from international protection measures, such as shelter, despite the fact that they had permanent guidance and assistance," he pointed.

In a statement, the agency said that migrants publicly declined to adhere to the program offered by the government, which allows them to remain in the national territory and benefit from medical, educational and temporary employment services.

The caravan that has traveled through Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz and Puebla received humanitarian and security support from the Beta Group for the protection of migrants and the Federal Police "who have provided shelter, food, medical services, as well as guidance in immigration matters. "

Gobernación also said that they have maintained coordination with the authorities of Chiapas, Oaxaca and Querétaro, about the needs of the caravan's members.

The National Institute of Migration (INM), said, only installed a shelter to care for foreigners who decided to start the process of refuge, while analyzing their request.

Likewise, the governments of Mexico City and Oaxaca have provided assistance to the caravan.

The INM, he added, has "redoubled" the coordination with the International Organization for Migration, among others, in order for it to channel the requests for assisted voluntary return.
