PHOENIX -- The mother of a Valley policeman killed by an intoxicated wrong-way driver who was in the country without permission, wants answers from the top as to why the man wasn't deported years ago after a criminal conviction.
Mary Ann Mendoza wrote President Barack Obama on Wednesday, demanding that he explain why Raul Silva Corona was allowed to remain in the United States, where he eventually was responsible for the death of her son, Mesa Police Sgt. Brandon Mendoza.
Corona and Mendoza died May 12 on a Tempe, Ariz., freeway ramp when the off-duty officer's car collided head-on with Corona's vehicle. An autopsy revealed Corona's blood-alcohol content was three times the legal limit.
Court records showed that Corona had pleaded guilty to a criminal conspiracy charge in Adams County, Colorado, and that other charges were dismissed.
The White House did not respond immediately Thursday to a request for comment.
