Customs and Border Protection officers assigned to the Douglas Port of Entry were conducting routine outbound inspections Thursday along with Douglas Border Patrol agents and Douglas Police when they referred Louis Armando Collins-Avila, 41, for an additional inspection of his SUV.

During the inspection, officials say they found 3,000 rounds of ammunition often used in assault weapons along with 2,000 rounds of 9 mm ammo and 1,000 rounds of .38-caliber ammunition.

The vehicle and ammunition were processed for seizure.

Collins-Avila was taken into custody and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations for further investigation.
