Police seized 10 assault rifles, 10 large boxes of 7.62 caliber ammunition and rifle magazines from a Ford Focus stopped Jan. 8 in Nogales.

A 16-year-old male was arrested Friday in Nogales after police stopped the car he was driving and found a stockpile of high-powered guns and ammunition in the trunk.

At around 8 a.m., officers from the Nogales Police Department, working in conjunction with other state and federal law enforcement agencies, stopped a white Ford Focus sedan near the 100 block of North West Street, NPD said in a news release.

Inside the vehicle, officers found 10 assault rifles, 10 large boxes of 7.62 caliber ammunition and rifle magazines.

The driver and sole occupant, a U.S. citizen residing in Nogales, Sonora, was arrested for being in possession of the firearms and ammunition, NPD said. The investigation was turned over to the local HIDTA Task Force.
