TUCSON, Ariz. -- An autopsy report concludes that a U.S. Border
Patrol agent who was killed by friendly fire near the Arizona-Mexico
border had died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Medical examiners said in a report released Wednesday that a bullet
slug and a bullet fragment were recovered from the body of 30-year-
old Agent Nicholas Ivie.

Investigators said Ivie and two other agents had responded to a
tripped underground sensor that's designed to detect smugglers and
illegal immigrants on Oct. 2 and had approached the location from
opposite directions before opening fire on each other.

The shooting occurred in the early morning hours in an area known for
drug smuggling.

The autopsy report doesn't say which agent fired the fatal shot.
