A Border Patrol agent was shot in a remote western corner of Santa Cruz County early Tuesday morning.

"The Border Patrol agent was shot and subsequently transported to an area hospital for medical treatment," the agency said in a brief news release. "Several subjects in the area were taken into custody."

The shooting occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m. south of Arivaca, the Border Patrol said. Santa Cruz County Sheriff Antonio Estrada confirmed that it happened in his jurisdiction in a "remote and rugged" area near the Ruby ghost town.

Estrada said his deputies responded and helped secure the scene, but left the investigation to the FBI.
"We did secure the scene and did get some initial information, but that's about it," he said.

The Border Patrol said U.S. Customs and Border Protection's Office of Professional Responsibility is also involved in the investigation.

The news release did not provide details on the nature of the agent's injuries or the circumstances that led to the shooting, but Estrada said it's his understanding that the injuries are not life-threatening.
"That's a good sign, from what we know," he said.

Jim Chilton, owner of the Chilton Ranch near Arivaca, said the shooting occurred in the Chiminea Canyon area of his ranch, six miles southeast of his headquarters and about 10 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border.
"We're deeply saddened about that happening on our ranch," he said.

Chilton said he learned about the shooting after receiving an email from Lisa Reed, a Border Patrol official. Reed wrote that the agent was alone when he was shot in the leg, arm and bulletproof vest, he said.

"The bulletproof vest saved his life," Chilton said. "He was a medic, also, and was able to patch his wounds and obtain help."

Chilton said he believes this is the first time a Border Patrol agent has been shot on his ranch, but he said many border-crossers have been injured or died there.

Chilton said that Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the Oath Keepers, a far-right anti-government organization, visited his ranch the night before the shooting to chat about border security.
However, he said, Rhodes left the same night and was not at the ranch at the time of the shooting.
"It's not relevant to the shooting in any way," Chilton said

The Border Patrol initially scheduled a news conference at 4 p.m. Tuesday at which Rodolfo Karisch, chief patrol agent of the Tucson Sector, was to deliver a statement regarding the shooting. The event was subsequently postponed to Wednesday morning due to "unforeseen circumstances."
