TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Many in southern Arizona are rushing to become U.S. Citizens after stricter requirements were put in place to make it possible.

There are a lot of people living in the U.S. with a resident alien status or green card.
After the Trump took office, the process to gain citizenship became lengthier.

Now, many people want to make their citizenship official to have more rights.
One of those people is Liza Navarro.

More than a decade ago she and her mom fled a domestic violence situation in Mexico.
Now, Navarro, her mom and her son are all in the process of becoming U.S. citizens.

She said it's something that's always been in the back of her mind, but she's done putting it off.
"I felt really comfortable, but not anymore," Navarro said. "I don't know if tomorrow residents won't be able to be in the United States. I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow. That's the problem."

And she's not alone.

Mi Familia Vota has been hosting citizenship forums around Arizona to answer questions, concerns and help people get the process started. The group said 160 people showed up to the last forum in Tucson.

"Before, when you submitted an application for citizenship, it was between 4 and 7 months and right now it's at 7 to 9 months or even up to a year so that they can get the interview or so they can get their citizenship certificate," said Nadia Acuña with Mi Familia Vota.

There's a citizenship forum happening on Saturday, April 29, at the Mexican consulate at 3915 E. Broadway Blvd. in Tucson. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., immigration lawyers will be there to answer questions and check applications to make sure everything is in order.
