Motel 6 will pay $10 million to settle a class-action lawsuit that said Arizona locations routinely gave their guest lists
to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Reuters reported Saturday .

The suit claimed many of the guests on these lists were targeted for deportation because of their "Latino-sounding names."

The amended settlement says Motel 6 must adhere to a three-year consent decree to not give guest information to immigration authorities
without a warrant or subpoena and to provide training on the issue to workers.
Victims will also be compensated.

A previous settlement reached in November was shot down by a federal judge
because he said it didn't go far enough in ensuring the plaintiffs would be found and compensated.
Many of the plaintiffs are undocumented immigrants who may not be willing to identify themselves in order to collect damages.

"Motel 6 fully recognizes the seriousness of the situation and accepts full responsibility for both compensating those who were harmed
and taking the necessary steps to ensure that we protect the privacy of our guests.
Since this issue emerged, we've taken strong action to make sure a similar issue never happens again in the future,"
a spokesman for the company said in a written statement, according to Reuters.

The lawsuit was filed in January 2018
by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund
on behalf of unidentified Motel 6 guests with Latino names.

In April, Motel 6 agreed to pay $12 million to settle a similar lawsuit filed by Washington state.

In the Agape shelter they have received training to avoid being deceived.

More than 300 Mexican and Central American migrants from the Agape Christian shelter are stalked by alleged contractors
who promise them jobs with good salaries, benefits and a home; and others by "good-hearted" people who promise to reach the United States.

María Cristina Rojas, coordinator of the association commented that they have received training
from anti-kidnapping and anti-trafficking agents, in order to avoid tragedies.

He explained that migrants are vulnerable to suffer these crimes due to their desperation to leave behind the poverty
for which they left their country or people.

Cristina Rojas recounted the case of a Central American who one day received the invitation of a "contractor"
to do masonry work, in exchange for a good pay and house.

In the end, the migrant who was suffering a kidnapping and labor exploitation,
had to pay his own ransom to obtain his freedom and his documentation.

He spoke about the case of a Honduran father and daughter who accepted the help of a pollero,
who advised the minor to jump over the border wall and surrender to the border patrol agents
so that a relative living in the American Union could rescue her later.

"For people who are dedicated to cheating, migrants are walking money, women for prostitution.
Newborns to sell them. Men for organ sales, "said the shelter coordinator.

He commented that they have been stricter in security and migrants are prohibited from bringing people from outside the community.

In addition, they are monitored by cameras to avoid drug use, robbery and fights between migrants,
if they violate this rule they are expelled from the shelter, said María Cristina Rojas.

Francisco Moreno Barrón, archbishop of the Archdiocese of Tijuana,
said he was concerned about the harassment that migrants are currently suffering
from elements of the National Guard and agents of the National Institute of Migration (INM).

Church Worries of Military Harassment of Migrants

The arrival of hundreds of Central American migrants is expected in the region.
BC will contribute 17 thousand jobs to migrants
