MEXICALI, Baja California (GH)

In a week a thousand Central Americans have arrived by train to Mexicali, while the flow of the caravan north of the country reaches 10 thousand people, explained Luis Humberto López Torres Coto.

The delegate of the National Institute of Migration (INM) in Baja California explained that the caravan is mobilized in four groups, which in sum reach the aforementioned figure. He also reported that it is premature to say that all come to Baja California.

He noted that the arrival will be varied because some come on foot and others by truck or train. Meeting at the service desk for the Caravan of Migrants, staff of Ferrocarriles Mexicanos said that last Friday to yesterday, it is estimated that a thousand Central Americans have arrived in Mexicali on board the train.

They detailed that per day the regular flow is that a maximum of 70 people board the train, but since last week 200 depart daily on the train from Empalme, Sonora.

The delegate of the INM reiterated that there are at least 100 Central Americans who have already arrived in Mexicali, several of them detected as guides.

THE GROUPS

The first group of the caravan is 4 thousand 800 people, where 30% are women and 20% under 10 years of age, composed of people from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.

According to official figures of the authority of the City of Mexico, the group does not reach 5 thousand people, but according to data of the civil organizations it can be a group of up to 7 thousand people.

The INM delegate explained that they are organized, where they held an assembly on Tuesday to define whether the route will be in the Northeast, Center or Northwest of the country.

The second group is made up of 1,500 people, as well as people from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala and are located in Santo Domingo, Oaxaca.

A third group is located in a temporary shelter in Chiapas with 500 people, all from El Salvador, at midday on Wednesday.

The fourth group, also composed mainly of Salvadorans, totals 2 thousand people in movement towards Tapachula.

At the migrant assistance desk, it was reported that if groups were mobilized on foot, it would take 537 hours (22 days) to reach Tijuana or 34 to 36 hours on public transport.

If they move to Ciudad Juárez, it would take 336 hours (14 days) on foot or 20 hours by passenger bus, in both cases without stops.

They also reported that the groups are requesting to reach shelters where everyone can be together, they are not allowing to be separated.

Therefore, they will analyze the strategies to place community kitchens in the shelters that have the installation capacity.
