The government of Mexico will request today the support of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), so that in coordination with the competent authorities of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, and in conjunction with the National Institute of Migration (INM) and the Mexican Commission for Assistance to Refugees (Comar), accompany the attention of possible refugee applicants who may appear on the southern border of Mexico.

The request for UNHCR support will be formally presented today by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Luis Videgaray Caso, during the meeting he will hold with the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, in New York .

"This measure is intended to contribute to a humanitarian solution, attached to the legal framework, respectful of human rights, transparent and with the help of the international community, through the corresponding bodies of the United Nations Organization.

Likewise, this measure seeks to guarantee the safety and integrity of migrants, particularly that of minors, the elderly and women, and to prevent people from being deceived by international criminal organizations dedicated to the trafficking of persons, which endanger them. their lives, "says the SRE in a statement.

The Mexican government reiterated:

1. That any person wishing to enter national territory must do so in compliance with the requirements established in the Migration Law and through authorized entry points, and may move freely in it for the duration of the visa.

2. That the current legislation does not provide for a document granting admission to Mexico without meeting requirements to transit to a neighboring country.

3. That any person who enters the national territory and wishes to request the recognition of refugee status or be a beneficiary of complementary protection measures, must do so individually, in accordance with current legislation and international law.

Finally, the Mexican government said that it reiterates its commitment to the efforts of the international community in favor of safe, orderly and regular migration; and with the human rights of migrants. At the same time, it expresses its conviction that international dialogue and cooperation between the countries of origin, transit and destination of migrants are indispensable to face the challenges implied by the migratory phenomenon.
