A Nogales man with an extensive criminal history has been sentenced for trying to smuggle more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition into Mexico,
federal authorities said.
The U.S. Attorney's Office said Gabriel Rivero, 41, was sentenced to 7.6 years in prison with three years' of supervised release.
Authorities said Rivero was arrested at the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales on Feb. 11, 2016.
A spare tire, which had 5,517 rounds of pistol and rifle ammunition hidden inside, fell off a truck Rivero was driving.
Rivero tried to put the tire back into his truck but was not able to lift it so he abandoned it and drove through the port.
Authorities checked the tire, found the ammo and arrested Rivero.
According to court documents, Rivero has prior convictions including aggravated assault (1994), attempted kidnapping (January 2009)
and felony drug charges (August 2009).
