TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - A United States Border Patrol agent's vehicle was shot at Friday night south of Sierra Vista, according to a statement from Customs and Border Protection.

CBP says on Friday at 5:30 p.m. an agent assigned to a mobile surveillance unit near Hereford Road heard several shots fired and observed two unknown individuals with a rifle from a distance.

An unoccupied Border Patrol vehicle that was next to the surveillance unit was struck by bullets, according to CBP.

The agent was not injured and did not return fire at the suspects. The suspects then fled on foot and remain at large at this time.

The Cochise County Sheriff's Office and CBP are actively investigating this incident.

Nogales registers 50 homicides during 2016

A total of 50 homicides were registered during the past year in Nogales, of which four correspond to women, two to children under one and two years of age.
The infanticides recorded during 2016 were the cases that most dismayed the community, due to the way in which both cases occurred in Nogales.
In addition Nogales closes the year with the highest number of automobile accident deaths in the last five years.

The Public Security reports indicate that during the month of January were recorded five homicides, whereas in February the figure fell to four and March culminated with three, all victims being men.
During the month of April three more homicides were raised, being in May and June that registered two in each month, arriving at half a year 2016 with 19 violent deaths.

Official reports indicate that in July violence increased with three more murders, with statistics during the month of August, in which eight more homicides were added, being the most violent month of the year.
Followed from September with five murders, October with seven homicides being two of them female victims.
During the month of November were registered six crimes, including the first infanticide of the year with the murder of a small one year old, by his stepfather.

To end the 2016, the community is again impacted by the second infanticide, in this case was a child of two years old who was killed by his own mother, closing the year with three homicides this month.

In total, 50 homicides were recorded this year, plus dozens of missing persons, presumably related to organized crime.

Road accidents
With 27 deaths in traffic accidents the city of Nogales closes the year with the highest death rate in the last five years, also increasing the number of people affected by injuries with 460 vehicular mishaps and millions of pesos in property damage.

Official records indicate that of the 27 deaths in accidents, 11 have occurred on the International Highway, 11 more in the urban area, two on the road to Mascareñas and two on the periphery heading west.
